It’s natural to feel alarmed when you realize what you’ve accidentally sucked into your vacuum cleaner. Take a deep breath and remember you can effectively handle this situation by following proper cleaning protocols.

Step One: Safety First!

Mouse droppings may look harmless, but these tiny pellets are jam-packed with harmful pathogens and bacteria (like salmonella and Hantavirus) that could make you seriously ill. Before cleaning mouse droppings in your home, follow these safety procedures to avoid accidental contamination.

Before starting, don appropriate protection to minimize direct contact with the harmful substances. Wear disposable gloves, a reliable barrier between your skin and any contaminants you may encounter during cleaning.

Also, use a dust mask to avoid inhaling any fine particles or allergens in the area. We suggest wearing long-sleeved clothing to provide an extra layer of defense against rodent droppings.

Keeping yourself safe extends beyond the items you wear. Before cleaning further, open all windows and doors to circulate fresh air. Increasing the airflow will effectively disperse any remaining airborne particles that may linger in the air following vacuuming.

Never attempt to clean mouse droppings without proper ventilation. Airborne particles infected by Hantavirus could cause Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe illness resulting from accidental inhalation.

Step Two: Disinfect Your Vacuum

After you’ve accidentally vacuumed mouse droppings, remember to exercise caution when you clean up your vacuum. Empty the vacuum bag or canister carefully. If your vacuum cleaner uses a bag, remove it and dispose of it in a sealed garbage bag.

If it has a canister, empty the contents directly into a sealed garbage bag. Be cautious not to scatter or release dust or particles into the surrounding area.

Disassemble removable parts, such as filters, brushes, or attachments. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for guidance on properly disassembling these components.

Using a mild disinfectant solution or a mixture of one part bleach to ten parts water, wipe down and sanitize the removable parts of the vacuum cleaner. Pay close attention to areas that may have come into contact with the mouse droppings. Ensure that the cleaning solution is safe for the specific components of your vacuum cleaner.

For non-removable parts of the vacuum cleaner, such as the interior of the main unit, use a damp cloth or sponge with the disinfectant solution to wipe down the surfaces thoroughly. Take care not to saturate the electrical components or any sensitive areas. Again, refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid damaging the equipment.

After cleaning, allow all the components to air dry completely. Once dry, reassemble the vacuum cleaner, ensuring all parts are securely attached. Want a complete guide to cleaning up your vacuum? Take a look at this article for more information!

Get rid of the disposable gloves, cleaning cloths, and other used materials in a garbage bag. Properly seal the bag and dispose of it in an outdoor garbage bin.

Finally, remove your gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Congratulations! Your vacuum is clean once again.

Step Three: Proper Disposal

Once you have finished cleaning and gathered all the used materials, it’s time to dispose of them properly. Don’t worry–  we’ve got you covered with some simple yet effective steps to ensure safe disposal and minimize potential risks.

Step 1: Gather the used cleaning materials, including gloves and cleaning cloths, and place them inside a sturdy garbage bag.

Step 2: Seal the bag securely, making sure there are no leaks or openings. We don’t want any rogue droppings making a surprise appearance later on!

Step 3: Now comes the grand finale – disposing of the bag. Take it outside and give it a proper send-off by placing it in an outdoor garbage bin.

Avoid touching your face or other surfaces until you remove everything from your home. Once you’ve given your hands a good wash and cleaned up your area, you’ve successfully and safely disposed of the rodent droppings indoors and inside your vacuum.
